How Cigna coverage works
What is Cigna?
Cigna Healthcare offers dental coverage nationwide, most commonly through employer benefits. Its dental plans run on their own networks, separate from Cigna medical coverage.
Plan types to know
The two main structures are Cigna Dental PPO plans, which let you go out of network at a higher cost, and Cigna Dental Care (DHMO) plans, which use a primary dentist and fixed copays with no out-of-network coverage.
Verify your coverage before you book
- 1. Confirm your exact plan and network. Call the number on your member card or check your carrier's portal. One carrier name can cover many distinct networks.
- 2. Ask the practice directly. Give them your plan name and member ID, and ask whether they're in network for that specific plan.
- 3. Get a pre-treatment estimate for major work. Waiting periods of 6 to 12 months are common for crowns and dentures, so put the cost and timing on paper first.
