Fluoride Treatment
Also called: fluoride varnish, topical fluoride
Fluoride is a mineral that rebuilds weak spots in tooth enamel and makes teeth more resistant to decay. In the office it is applied as a quick varnish, gel, or foam, usually right after a cleaning. It is common for both kids and adults at higher risk of cavities.
What to expect
- The dentist or hygienist paints a varnish or applies a tray for a minute or two.
- You avoid eating or drinking for about 30 minutes afterward.
- There is no numbing and no discomfort.
Questions to ask a practice
- Am I at higher risk for cavities, and would extra fluoride help?
- Is fluoride included in my cleaning or billed separately?
- Do you offer prescription-strength fluoride toothpaste for home?
