Preventive Care
Dental Exam (Checkup)
Also called: dental checkup, oral exam, comprehensive exam
A dental exam is when the dentist reviews your teeth, gums, bite, and soft tissues, often with X-rays, to catch decay, gum issues, or other concerns early. It is the diagnostic half of a routine visit, with the cleaning being the preventive half.
What to expect
- The dentist checks each tooth, your gums, and screens for other oral health issues.
- X-rays may be taken to see between and below the teeth.
- You leave with a clear picture of what, if anything, needs treatment.
Questions to ask a practice
- Can you walk me through what you found and what is optional versus urgent?
- Do you provide a written treatment plan with costs?
- How do you handle a second opinion if I want one?
