Restorative & Repair
Cavity (Tooth Decay)
Also called: tooth decay, caries, dental caries
A cavity is a hole in a tooth caused by acids from bacteria breaking down the enamel. Caught early it is a simple fix; left alone it can grow and reach the nerve. The most common repair is a filling.
What to expect
- The dentist numbs the area, removes the decayed part, and fills it.
- A small cavity is usually a single short visit.
- You may feel mild sensitivity for a day or two afterward.
Questions to ask a practice
- How deep is the decay, and is a filling enough or does it need a crown?
- What filling material do you recommend and why?
- What can I change at home to prevent the next one?
